Great city. If you grew up in one of CIS countries with a population of 1 million +, with time Boston may seem small.
Distance from the sea: City on the coast of the ocean and a lot of lakes in addition. Analogue canoe trips on the river \ lake \ ocean is popular here. There are parks where you can barbecue.
It is benevolent. Boston - the city where there was to be the Civil War and the War of Independence, we all remember that this is a nation of immigrants, pronounced bias on this point.
The impression is normal. The population is very diverse, there are immigrants from around the world. Level of education, culture is much higher than the national average, so it’s often nice to talk to them.
July-August are very hot, winter: -5C .. + 5C. The only disadvantage is high humidity (no, not the tropics, but often considerable). Most of the year – mild climate.
Very good, the region is considered one of the best in the country for education. Harvard, MIT are technically located in Cambridge, but in fact – they are here.
It is believed that in the suburbs of Boston is one of the best medical clusters in the United States. The cost, as a whole in the west, is high, but if you are working, most is covered by the insurance. Insurance mechanism is intricate, but in the majority of cases it can be considered that this is the employer who pays, so you don’t worry about it. State law requires the insurance.
English, of course.Plenty of schools and courses in case you decide to improve. No matter how low is your level - you are unlikely to surprise the local: they saw different. As a rule, the desire to help you with the problem (to show where to go or to understand what you want to buy, or to explain if you sit at the bar) is higher than your contempt for the fact of not knowing the language.
Road access is great, from the highway you get into the city center (but it is normal for the United States). Sometimes in the rush hour there are delays. The quality of roads - a full order (of course, they can be repaired). The level of driving is very different, but, as a rule, everyone is very friendly and gives way to each other.Surely, there are inexperienced drivers impeding movement ( some swear at them but you won’t hear anything :)). The cost of gasoline in 2014 (attention) is almost in direct proportion to the price of barrels of oil (for example, oil has fallen by 30% => gasoline has fallen by about 30%). Public transportation is very developed, both ground and underground. Cyclists are respected on the road.
Traveling to other countries: Domestically, you can drive and fly with local identification documents (driver's license or any equivalent, that you can get without problems). For the rest, as everywhere: passport + visa ...
Everything depends on your preference.Sports activity is very popular (not just the extreme) and pub crawl. You won’ t find strip clubs in Boston. For the rest, I think, it can be described as "every whim for your money." Products (food) are divided essentially into two categories: conventional and organic (the difference in price is usually twice-fourfold).
If it is work segment as STEM (science, tech, engineering, math), there shouldn’t be problems. Salary is average for the country. It’s important to remember that priority is given to those who have sample local diplomas and who have experience in the United States. If you have a degrees from more or less serious university of CIS- to make evaluation in the local equivalent will not be difficult.
After the crisis of 2008-9's housing prices fell as elsewhere in the United States, but in Boston the cost of housing has rebounded yet. If you buy, the price will depend in general on the area (suburbs). Key features in the prices will be quality of school education, crime and infrastructure. If you think about mortgages + 4% per annum (upward trend), it is important to have a local credit history. Rent price is from $ 400 for something like a communal flat to $2.5-3K for something in the center that you can show off ( clear that the upper limit is blurred and the concept “show off” is conditional.)
In our understanding, it doesn’t exist. Maybe somewhere something is stolen. But in general, Americans are quiet and any verbal conflict develops rarely here into something serious. In the quarter ( the children are frightened by at night), someone can stick to you with words "Hey, dude," but if it’s not too late and you didn’t borrow to the drug dealer, everything will be fine.
The city and state are officially lgbt-friendly. Many foreign students. It seems that relations are started at any age. In principle, everything as always.
With the availability of any questions. 2-3 basic providers. If you want to stream something nonstop - count on $ 80+ per month. Mobile Internet: usually up to 5GB included in the monthly fee, then 1GB/ $ 10.
The region's economy looks quite alive. Main areas: finance, insurance, medicine, biotech \ pharma, education, real estate, IT ... Inflation is noticeable (according to various different positions, but probably 3-6%).
