Overall impression

It’s a very beautiful city. It’s good for travelling as well as for permanent residence. There are many recreation areas, parks and beautiful places.
Proximity to the sea: St. Petersburg is built on the seashore, but it’s hard to find a place to swim because of bad ecology and cold weather.

Attitude to foreigners

There are many foreigners here, so the attitude towards them is quite good. Many people from America, Europe and Asia come here. It’s probably the only place in Russia where you may ask a question in English and receive an answer.

Impression of local population

Local people are very friendly, especially in comparison with Russian regional cities. They are always willing to help you.

Climate

The climate is wet and windy because of the sea proximity. It is often cloudy. In summer there are “white nights”.

Education

There are many universities to choose from.

Quality of medicine (quality and cost)

The quality is good. There are many private hospitals.

Language (learning of the local language and communication with the local people)

The main language is Russian, but it is common to hear other languages in the streets or in metro. Many people speak English and some other foreign languages.

Transport (road access, quality of roads, level of driving, gasoline cost, public transportation)

There are too many cars and too much noise. много машин и шума. At the rush hour it is almost impossible to go anywhere: there are traffic jams, and metro is crowded. There are monthly passes which cost 2000 RUR and allow you to use any public transport in the city.
Travelling abroad: It is easy. There are trains and planes to any part of the world except for Antarctica. Many people go to Finland on weekends to do shopping.

Prices (cost of living, food, entertainment)

Cost of living is just a bit higher than in other Russian cities. If you have a place to live you won’t spend much. Prices on food and entertainment differ, but it is possible to find anything cheap enough. There are many cafes and restaurants so it is cheaper to eat out rather than cook at home.

Job (search complexity, level of salary)

There’s plenty of work, IT sphere is not an exception, but it is easy to find a job only if you are a good specialist. The salaries are not very high, people go to Moscow to earn more. But local salaries are enough to live here.

Housing (cost, availability, rent, purchase)

Rental fees are comparatively high, so it may take one third or even half of your salary. One bedroom apartment costs 20 thousand RUR per month. It is possible to buy an apartment if you have a really good salary or take a credit.

Crime

The crime rate is the same as in other Russian cities or even lower.

Women \ men (for dating)

Women may be haughty and arrogant but there will be enough of them if you communicate well.

Internet access (availability, price)

The internet is quite cheap, around 400 RUR per month.

The region's economy (crisis, inflation)

In general, the situation is stable. But liberal citizens who adore West countries are often not happy with what happens here.
