Overall impression

Absolute heaven. The most important thing is not to spoil the image of the new wave of downshifters.
Seaside: it is all around. That is one of the ideas of living on an island.

Attitude to foreigners

Tourists are treated as walking ATMs, since their main purpose is expected to be to spend money. There is no coercion, no Turkish brazen pushiness. Everything is done so that the tourists enjoy spending money and get strong emotions and new sensations out of the deal. 90% of the vacationers enjoy their time here, the rest are snobs.
The attitude differs greatly if you arrive to live here. You become part the of the greater island family. It is most important not to shout, respect Thai customs and culture and everything will be great.

Impression of local population

Buddhists. This describes them fully. It is hard for us to understand this society, coming from countries with several bloody revolutions per century. We are far behind the islanders’ society.

Climate

Stable. 28-32 degrees guarantees comfort and absence of seasonal and respiratory diseases.

Education

The quality on the island leaves a lot to be desired. There are many international schools and universities in Bangkok. Lately, Thai university students have been winning many international competitions, which means something.

Quality of medicine (quality and cost)

Insurance is very important. Four international hospitals and a cheap but of good quality local hospital.

Language (learning of the local language and communication with the local people)

English, Thai, Chinese, German, French. Even Russian is slowly beginning to be spoken.

Transport (road access, quality of roads, level of driving, gasoline cost, public transportation)

A totally new universe for a city-dweller. Motorbikes are the main means of transport. You have to be careful, but usually everybody moves in a constant energoinformational environment. Renting a motorbike costs 100$ per month, petrol costs another 50$.
Going abroad: just decide and drive (fly).

Job (search complexity, level of salary)

Only freelancing or starting your own business, which is fast and easy.

Housing (cost, availability, rent, purchase)

Apartments start at 250$ per month, decent house with a swimming pool starts at 400$ per month.

Crime

It is fine unless you get involved in criminal activities. Nothing has happened during my 1.5 years here. There is stealing like everywhere. Done by those coming from Myanmar or Cambodia, locals don’t steal.

Women \ men (for dating)

Each to their own. Services provided for payment. Do check that she isn’t a transvestite.

Internet access (availability, price)

Stable. 20/2 Mb – 50$ per month. 4G networks are being tested for cellular use.
