Proximity to the sea: You can go there by plane only, it is very expensive. No one swims in the city pond. The nearest shores are 10-15 km away from the city. The Kama river is 30 km away from the city. There are no lakes; there are ponds, rivers and quarries.
There are few foreigners, but black people sometimes complain about impolite attitude towards them.
Local people are leisurely rustic. There’s a tendency to lyricism and creativity (this is what the Udmurts are known for). However, modern life has corrupted local people, they have become less responsive and sincere.
Continental climate: snowy winter with temperatures around 30 degrees below zero, hot summer with temperatures up to 30 degrees, wet spring and autumn.
There are many universities including Petroleum University, Academy of Medicine and Agricultural Academy. The quality of higher education is good, but there’s no science in the city. Programmers from Izhevsk are good.
The quality is poor, especially when dealing with traumatology, oncology and any complex disease. Free clinics are full of pensioners. Commercial hospitals are too expensive and dishonest.
Udmurtia is a national republic, but everyone speaks Russian. Udmurt language is very rare. Some young people speak English.
The city is compact. Public transport is well developed. There are few minibuses, the taxi is cheap. However, the situation with car traffic in the city center has recently worsened. Local people drive better than in neighboring Tatarstan. The roads are awful, especially in spring and autumn.
Travelling abroad: Going abroad is very expensive, the city is situated in the Russian inland. A ticket to Moscow costs 7000 RUR if you choose to go by plane (approximately 1,5 hours) or 2000 RUR if you go on train, which takes almost 24 hours. If you wish to go on popular tourist destinations like Egypt or Turkey, you may fly there from the nearest cities (Kazan, Yekaterinburg).
In the last couple of years prices, especially for food and gasoline, rise faster than salaries.
It is really easy to get a low-paid job, but good job is hard to find. IT market is quite big, but there are few interesting projects – most of them are websites and customized software for enterprises. An average salary of a programmer is 1000 – 2000 dollars.
Rental fee starts at 10.000 RUR per month. Real estate prices are high compared to local salaries: 50000 RUR per square meter, while average salary here is 20 – 25 thousand RUR per month.
It’s quite calm here, at least much better than in the 90s. However, it’s better not to visit old commuter towns. There’s no ethnic crime.
It depends. There are many Udmurt girls with high cheekbones, small eyes, pale freckled skin and blond hair.
Fast and cheap. Prices vary from 300 to 1000 RUR per month for 5-10 Mbit/s.
People are waiting for next crisis.
