A beautiful city combining modern and historic architecture. A very green city with multiple monuments.
Bearable. Many tourists from China (of 2 types – tourists and sellers with tourist visas), also from Japan and Korea.
Locals have their peculiarities) and speak too fast for Westerners.
The last 7 years have been unpredictable, there can be either rains or draughts in summer, winters are also unpredictable.
The education sphere is well-developed. Many universities and specialist secondary schools. For example: The Infocomms Institute, the Railways University, the Institute of Culture, The Humanitarian University, the University of the Pacific Ocean.
The quality of service is fine, unless you go to unlicensed places. The best hospitals are the “Viveya” clinic and KKB №1. Both offer decent service and have good specialists. I don’t know the costs, since I had my mandatory medical insurance.
The language is the usual Russian, but very fast-spoken, like in Chinese. The people in the European part of Russia speak about 3 times slower. So, those of you moving from the Central Federal District should be ready to ask the locals to repeat themselves.
A lot of cars, mostly Japanese. The roads are acceptable, you need to go to the far outskirts or find a neglected yard to see potholes. The level of driving is like in Thailand, it is hard to find a competent and considerate driver (1/10000), many reckless drivers. The women are very self-assured, would often cut in ahead and consider themselves the only ones on the road. Petrol costs about 35-39 rubles per liter. Public transportation is represented by old Korean buses (20 rubles per ticket) or taxi buses costing 30-32.
Living wage is estimated at 14000, but that is possible only in a cardboard box, I believe. You need about 30000, if you have your own place, or about 50000, if you are renting. A family of two should have no problems earning this amount. Assorted groceries. Many entertainment options: cinemas, shopping centers with gaming floors. Multiple clubs, bars, restaurants, cafes.
An educated person should have no problems finding a job. The salaries are acceptable and depend on work experience and type of work, varying from 15000 to 45000 (street cleaner to developer).
Many housing options, active on-going construction on the outskirts. Center constitutes a cultural zone, so modern buildings are limited by zones. Average rent is about 35000. You can find options as low as 20000 in the southern district. Flats in new buildings cost about 3 million for a single-room, 3,5 – for a double-room and 4+ million for triple-room.
Not entirely eradicated, but more or less calm. Riffraff can be seen in cities world-over in the evening.
Don’t know the ratio and don’t care.
Not as many service providers as in Moscow.
Internet services are provided by the universal Russian providers TTK, Rostelekom, Bilayn, MTC, Megafon and the local Redcom, Strelatelekom and Vostoktelekom.
10Mbit/sec costs about 550-600 rubles.
The groceries and fuel prices are rising due to the crisis. Inflation is greatly felt. The prices are on the capital’s level. Even the prices in Vladivostok are lower. The high prices are felt most when it comes to appliances and digital equipment.
